Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
Surrey Quest did have a change of plans, and then didn’t! He is fit and raring to go so we did enter him to run on the Tommy Whittle at Haydock yesterday, but the rain came, and Haydock is the one course that doesn’t take a lot of rain before the ground deteriorates and races become very attritional. Quest has quite a low economic jumping style, but the fences would seem a lot bigger to him out of heavy ground. He’ll have an entry into next Saturday’s Mandarin Trophy at Newbury, the race that he won a year ago. No horse has ever retained the Mandarin is successive years, and plus the race this year is worth more and a 0-145 handicap (last year a 0-135) so it will be a tough ask and he may not even run if the ground is too quick.
Sea Presenting, who is now sold out, worked well in the week. She has such a good attitude and was leading the string on Toby’s gallops this week. She’s a well-proportioned mare who will strengthen over time and so far, so good, she’s doing everything that is being asked of her. She’ll be on a racetrack in January and apologies from me, the previously mentioned race at Ludlow on the 6th is a mare’s only race so it is still in play along with other options throughout the month.
There are also plenty of options for Surrey Lord in January, he’ll be having one more bumper, one we want to win, so as we have mentioned before, we will be cherry picking the right race for him.
The only real news on the flat horses is that Surrey Moon is taking a few weeks off with growing pains. He’s been working very well and is quite forward, but he’s just been easing off his work the past few days and an x-ray has revealed his growth plates are quite open, ie underdeveloped. He’ll have 4-6 weeks in the paddock and come back into training towards the end of January. It’s not a bad thing for young horses to have some time out, it lets them mature physically without putting stress on the body and it is something we encourage. All the other horses are well with Surrey Noir the next to run on January 10th.
Good luck to Surrey Quest this week, we look forward to seeing him appear in another big race.
Finally, best wishes to you and your families, and our thoughts are with those who are no longer with us. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
